I say I find it odd to class Freud with a group of fiction writers. “Well – he is writing fiction,” Phillips replies. “A case history is a representation in language of something that went on between two people, right? Even if you videoed it, you couldn’t video what was going on inside the heads of the people. So it is like fiction, insofar as it is an attempt to produce a documentary account of something that is fictionalised by the mere representation of it in words. In other words, a great deal of it is – in the best sense – making it up.”
